Upcycling

A is a knitter and wants to organize her on-going projects in yarn bags. She asked me to take a shirt she no longer wears, but still likes, and use it for the outer fabric on the project. I stabilized the fabric, lined the bag, added a draw string and clear vinyl bottom to mimic a commercially-available yarn bag, and the result is a pint-sized, specialized duffel bag for crafts.

  1. Hi! Love your creations! I was just wondering what you use to stabilize your fabric? Thanks

  2. Kaylin,
To stabilize this shirt fabric so it wouldn't stretch as I worked with it I used iron-on woven stabilizer (Pellon SF101 shape-flex). You can get it at the fabric store on the bolt. I also use the woven stabilizer for linen and light cottons. I like the non-woven fusible interfacing for giving extra heft to most cottons, fusible fleece for padding zippered pouches and Pellon 70 for anything stiff (like a bag I want to stand up on its own or a fabric basket).
    Thanks for following my blog!
